Who I Am
I have many names. I like to be called Betty, but more often it's Mrs. Calkin, by my students, Fit, the name I gave myself, 1K, which my husband lovingly began calling me after I gave a kidney to his step sister, Ninja, also a Ken nickname because my hybrid car and I are exceptionally quiet, and can scare the crud outta him when it's his turn, Beej, which my family calls me, and Mom, my personal favorite:) but my personality is that of Coleridge's Ancient Mariner. I get anxiety sometimes, just worried about the things that go on in this crazy world, and how evil people can be to each other. I've discovered that the only way to find true unselfish happiness is to find someone worse off than myself, and give them all the charity or loving attention that I can muster. When I can find that earthly creature, always at an uncertain hour, the worst crimes of society fall away from pure moments; my being is lightened and I remember again, who I am, a tiny but oh-so-important ray of God's living light. I wonder who I will meet today.
