Best Dog Ever
Brutus was a 10 lb little bear of a Bull Mastiff when I picked him up at LAX in October of 2005. He waddled out of the puppy crate and into my lap at 9pm that night and has had a huge spot in our hearts ever since.
We've had our share of large dogs, mainly Rottweillers, beginning with Daisy (lol yes and what a huge bundle of joyous love she was RIP) and then Goliath, with the Batman ears (ROFL how I loved him too!) In fact, Goliath was like Brutus' dad for just a few months. But as I look back over the past eight and a half years, I cannot deny what a treasure Brutus has been. He took on two stray pit bulls and put them in their places, while Roxy cowered in a corner. And only a month ago he took on a coyote at 3am and chased it off, suffering only a cut above his left eye. That's why we really didn't realize how sick he is. He's always been the sweetest and most perfect companion and now he's having all these seizures suddenly and if we want to find out why well its $1500 and he is really old so odds are he will die really soon either way, so we just had to get him Valium and phenobarbitol and keep him comfortable. It's heartbreaking; I can feel it as the seizures get longer and more intense and we feel so helpless.
He's resting now. The last seizure was at 7am and he is barely lifting his head to drink water now. I dug out his puppy pictures and from a small baby til now, Brutus' profound impact on our family is clear, and it's of a love so pure, the loss is devastating. I have to take him in to his vet one last time. RIP Brutus. I love you so very much!
